Portland Platinum?
April 30th, 2008
Portland Oregon was awarded the Platinum status by theĀ League of American Bicyclists. According to them this makes Portland the mark of excellence for which all large cities in America should try to emulate for bicycle education, safety, infrastructure and improvements. This is a great thing for Portland, but it makes me seriously shudder that Portland is the role model of excellence. The state of affairs in all other American cities must be absolutely horrendous. Portland may give a damn about their cycling activism, but we are a long, long way from anything that could be considered reasonable for cycling anywhere. Home to the absolute worst drivers I have come across anywhere in the world, Portland is far from a state of educated drivers and cyclists. I guess it’s a cute award to make folks feel better about riding in shit weather 9 months out of the year. As far as role model status, I think not.
